In Which I Pretend to be Al Gore

Lucky readers, today you get to hear about that time I pretended I was a hippie - which, for the purposes of this post, I am defining as

Hippie: hip pee; a do-gooder attempting to help save the earth from global warming and stuff.  A good person.

Or maybe I'm not a hippie...maybe I just picked what seemed like the easiest solution to a problem I was having...,
Are you confused enough now that you want me to explain, or are you too busy laughing at how inaccurate a description of me that is?

A couple weeks ago, one of my roommates had a brilliant idea that would solve a couple problems we'd been having: (1) there is no dumpster in our building area, so we have to walk the distance of 5 buildings to get to one...and we're too lazy for that shiz.  And, well, things start to get stinky when you're keeping trash in the closet....  and (2) we don't have a garbage disposal, which means the trash is even stinkier because it has banana peals and stuff in it.

So the solution?  A rubbermaid container from Target, dirt, and a couple (hundred) worms.
We decided to make a compost which, my roommate and the internet inform me, is actually good for the environment!

Ready to hear how we made that happen?  Lucky for you, I've made a step-by-step instruction list!

(1)
Walk downstairs to the scent equivalent of what you believe to be a wall of garbage.  Take the trash out, and furnish the apartment with Glades.  The entire downstairs will still smell for the rest of the day. Go to work to escape the smell.

(2)
Decide that the only solution has Al Gore's stamp of approval: a compost.  Start out slow though - just get a big rubbermaid container, put it outside, and start tossing your junk in:
- fruit cuttings, peels, or remains (like that gross papaya your roommate thought she'd enjoy, and then immediately threw out when she got a whiff of it)
- egg shells
- liquids, such as milk or juice
- basically, at least the way we see it, anything you eat.

(3)
Notice that your compost is attracting flies, and decide to make a trip to Walmart for dirt and worms.

(4)
After debating whether to go with all-purpose fertilizer or African Violet-fertilizer (eventually deciding on all-purpose), head home with two bags of the brown stuff and about 5 containers of worms.  Worms that neither you nor your roommate want to have to touch (pro tip: you will have to touch the worms when you leave the open container on the table, and the worm tries to escape).

(5)
Using a stick you found next to the tree outside, stir the contents of your rubbermaid bin, effectively burying all your garbage from the past couple weeks.  Take pictures to use as evidence when you brag to your family and friends.

(6)
Put the lid back on, and put your newly created compost somewhere outside where you can easily get to it.  We keep ours on the porch, right next to the sliding door.

My roommate informs me that eventually, we'll have a rubbermade container full of extremely fertile dirt.  So, if gardening's your thing - win win, right?

Have you ever done something like this, or are you going to now?  Is there something I didn't mention?

Thoughts Upon Moving Out

Being an apartment-renter (you know, like home-owner...except not) has awakened some strange urges in this girl lately.  It's like I'm turning into that woman my parents always swore I would, worried that my guests might decide to hate me if the house isn't perfectly clean when they come over.
Over the past month or so, thoughts and sentences such as these have occurred far too many times for my comfort....

** "Ohmygod I need to clean that bathroom right NOW" **

** "Roomie, I'm going to turn our home into a garden, okay?  It'll take some time though...I'll just bring home new flowers a couple of times a week..Actually, let's just go to Otts"
(most recently, I bought a peace lily from ACME at 11 at night on Friday) **

** "You don't know what Otts is!?!?!? We have to go NOW! They have volcano flowers, and a hill covered in mums!!" **

Here
** "I should stop spending so much money...in fact, I should put money into my savings"
(in case you were worried about that one....I spent over 100$ at the mall on Friday.  So don't worry, that don't spend money thing obviously isn't too strong an urge...) **

** "Grocery shopping! YAYY!"
(with, might I add, not a hint of sarcasm to be found) **

** "I wish I could paint....this room would be prettier in color!" **

Here
** "Wow... I love all those Pinterest boards full of home decor even more now!"
(That, I was unaware was even a possibility) **

What kind of crazy things did you start thinking/doing/saying when you got your first apartment/home?? I know I can't be the only crazy person with a blog...

My Terrarium

I hold the belief that it is, on occasion, completely acceptable to write a post that does not actually include any "writing".
This is one of those posts.

Yesterday, my friend gave me this beautiful terrarium as an apartment-warming gift :)
I am in love with it.

What is Home?

Day 32

Yesterday was National Take a Picture Day.

Even though I missed it, the categories - home, connections, and work - got me thinking.

How can I photograph home without the sounds, and the smells, and the feel that comes with it?  Every photograph I take, I wish I could bottle those other senses up with it, and I've always believed that great photographers can do that with only an image - communicate everything about that moment through colors printed on a page.

Today, as I photographed the flowers by my house, I realized how integral a part of the home a mailbox is.  Aside from the bills that it carries, it also brings love notes, photos from people you haven't seen, letters from pen-pals in another country... It's a part of who you are, and it carries pieces of the family - a large part of what makes a house a home.

What are your thoughts? How would you photograph "home" to show exactly what that idea means to you?

I'm Home...

She sat in that position for probably five minutes, and only moved when I tried to pet her.  Apparently, she just wanted to be photographed.

The flowers outside of my house are just starting to bloom.  For now, there are only three of these.  But by the time I'm home for Easter, I'm sure the little plot will be filled with them and others like them.

The flowers we plant never seem to grow.  But these have been popping up right around Spring every year since we moved in.  It's a mystery I've given up trying to solve.

Roses have always been my dad's favorite. In the house I grew up in, we had a beautiful pink rose bush in the backyard.  When this bush blooms, it's not nearly as pretty, but he still tends to it.

Right now it's just thorns and some leaves...

Home sweet home
