A Few Thoughts on a New Song

Sometimes, good music - the kind you've never heard before - is the only thing that can fix a really bad couple of days.  In a way that your favorite or most overplayed song can't, new music can take you away from the shit that makes you want to run run run.

Right now, that's what this song is for me.  Thank you Pandora.

In Lieu of a Real Post...

For the days I am all written out (I'm looking at you 50 pages worth of essays/research papers/articles/exams), I leave you with this instead - one of my current favorite songs to listen to when I get too busy to think.

What do you like to listen to when things get to be too much?

Double Fantasy*

A couple of months ago (way back in 2012), I told you that for my birthday, I'd received a record player.
Since then, I've been recording everything I can find in our basement - artists I know and love, those I've grown up with, and those (ahem, Canned Heat) I've really never heard of.
Maybe people who grew up with records rather than CDs, the Internet, and the iPod won't feel the same (I know my dad doesn't), but I love the crackle before a song starts.
And okay, maybe I just like the photograph-ability of records.  You can't really photograph a CD while it's playing...
This record - Double Fantasy by John Lennon and Yoko Ono, has been one of my favorite finds.
I found it buried in the stack of my uncle's records.  Unfortunately, I also found a BIG groove in it - that would have warped almost every song on the record.
A good friend of mine saw it though, and bought me the record for Christmas!

Have you ever listened to a record?  Which one is your favorite?

*Obviously from my post, the title came from the title of a John and Yoko album.

Almost Over

It's been a week spent at the library, speaking in whispers with friends and wandering from floor to floor looking for an empty table.
With long hours, and longer text books, the color of the page becoming indistinguishable from the hi-lighter used on it.
It's been a week of music, and cookies, and hot chocolate, and pages full of notes.
In a couple of days, the week will be over, and I'll be home.
Another semester ended, and a new page of my life ready to be written.
For now, I have a new playlist for you - this one full of instrumental songs, no words to distract you from the ones on the page.

A Playlist to Get You Through the Week

With finals starting tomorrow, I can use all the calming I can get.
And mostly, it comes in the form of:

- Starbucks gingerbread loafs and hot chocolate
- Teddy bears that are of legal drinking age
- Friends: text messages, library dates, movie nights....
- Music

Of course, I can't give you a too-old stuffed animal or a phone call from my friends, but I can give you a playlist of the music that's getting me through this week.

Yellow Punch Buggy

Day 53
One day (when I learn to drive, that is) I will own a yellow beetle, just like this one.  Well...maybe my car won't have all the flowers and hearts on it...and it will have to be just a tad bit bigger.  But you know, other than that, it'll be completely the same!

In other news, over the past week, this song has taken up permanent residence in my head.  It creeped in slowly, playing in the background of my everyday life - whether it be on the radio driving somewhere, or playing at work, when I'm only barely paying attention.  When I looked up the music video though, it was too late to turn around.  By the time I looked, it had already commandeered its own drawer in the theoretical bathroom.

Anyway...go listen! And then, while you're at it, listen to everything else by Gotye and Kimbra.
They're awesome.

(I apologize ahead of time for the time you will lose listening to this video, and for the fact that you'll find yourself periodically singing it to yourself without your prior knowledge of the fact)

Sunflowers

Day 45
I've been asking myself lately why most all of the photos I take are macro.  Or if not macro, at least close-up (like this photo).
And here's the conclusion I came to just now as I was outside photographing this flower:  Everything seems more interesting up close.  When I take landscape shots, I'm bored by them.  I think there's so much more to see when you look close.  And for me, photography is, in part, about capturing moments that people don't notice.  As a whole, most people will see the Black-Eyed Susans outside of my house.  But unless you were looking close, you'd never have noticed the baby bee (or whatever that is...) on the petals.

In other news, have some E.L.O.

Me and Gravity, We Never Could Agree

Does anybody else have those days every once in a while?
The kind of day where you wake up with a certain artist or band stuck in your head, and you just know that for the rest of the day that's all you'll be listening to?
Every so often, I'll have a John Mayer day.  Or Maroon 5, maybe.  And more often than not, I'll have a Beatles day.
Well, today is a Matt Nathanson kind of day.
I have absolutely no desire to listen to anything else for the rest of the day....maybe even the rest of the weekend.
How about you? Is there a certain band that you just want to listen to all day?
Happy Friday!
